Malu Marzarotto, Public and University Programs intern, spoke to other Wex interns about what it’s like to work among contemporary art, curators, and the mix of 250+ programs per year. Here's the first of two segments to spotlight a few that are working with us for 2018-19.

Malu is a fourth-year undergraduate student at The Ohio State University studying Arts Management in the Department of Arts Administration, Education, and Policy with minors in Leadership Studies and Studio Art. She is involved on campus as an ambassador for the College of Arts & Sciences, a Morrill Scholar, and a member of A.R.O.U.S.E., Ohio State’s College Radio. She's in her second year of interning at the Wex and is pictured above with other interns from 2017-18 (third from right). Following graduation this fall, Malu plans to work full-time at her co-founded design studio, Marcd.

If you're a student interested in applying for a Wex internship for the 2019-20 school year, applications will be accepted starting in late January. More info is available here.

What drew you to an internship at the Wex?
Some of the most influential art experiences I’ve had happened at the Wex.

Tell us about the aspects of your internship that you enjoy the most.
The work keeps me informed, involved, and scheduled with art events that I normally lose track of.

Where’s your favorite spot in the building and why?
The half-moon, striated ledge that overlooks the Oval [the whispering wall]. It’s a delightful place to draw and people watch, and the sunset glitters through the trees. Although I don’t go there anymore with the construction.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of school and work?
If I get the chance, I tend to go on spontaneous camping trips and hang out with bugs. Art is a part of every aspect of my school, work, life … so it’s all pretty integrated.

What drew you to an internship at the Wex?
My relationship with the Wex started almost as soon as I stepped foot onto Ohio State’s campus in 2014. At first I was motivated to go to the Wex to get free pizza at the Fall Student Party but soon I was attending events regularly and even found myself going to the Wex just to hangout and do homework. I found the space inspiring and felt my creativity could flourish. With encouragement from a friend, who was a Wex intern at the time, I applied for the design intern position.

Tell us about the aspects of your internship that you enjoy the most.
The people are awesome! As soon as I walk in the door they connect with me and we exchange genuine interest in each others lives. The members of the Design team encourage, challenge and teach me each day. I also really enjoy seeing the beautiful pieces that we design materialize in print or digital applications. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our designs living in the world and sharing moments with others.

Where’s your favorite spot in the building and why?
There is a small nook in Heirloom Café that I find absolutely perfect. The space receives natural light, it is in close proximity to an outlet, and it is slightly tucked away which creates this sense of comfort and warmth. Heirloom Café is full of delightful smells and tastes which adds to the pleasant experience. Any spare moment I have, you can find me here enjoying a lavender latte and working on homework.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of school and work?
I have a passion for performing, with dance being my medium of interest. For the past four years I have found opportunities to strengthen my dance capabilities, expand my education, and perform in beautiful venues across the country. Recently I have accepted a teaching position at a local high school where the kids are excited and eager to move.
