Wex[EP]: Dr. E

The set (rescheduled from July 23) features the premiere of two original songs from a new short-form work, Underlying Conditions: Black Women and Girls and Corona—A One-Woman Show, as well as other original tunes that speak to the current historical moment.

Dr. E (aka The Inspirational Soul Queen) is a multidimensional personality in the spirit of Maya Angelou—a songwriter, speaker, advocate, survivor, and Ohio State professor of literacy studies in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Her solo album Elevated earned her a SoulTracks.com nomination for “New Artist of the Year” in 2010 and its follow-up, Songs for the Struggle, was named one of The Soul Show’s (WYEP-FM Pittsburgh) top 10 albums of 2017. As today’s vocabulary has expanded to include “social distancing” and “essential businesses,” the Wex has entered into a conversation with some of our favorite local artists to bring you Essential Performances. With a nod to the short-form, often experimental nature of extended-play records, the Wex[EP] series seeks to document a facet of each artist’s practice and explore innovative ways of communing with one another during this rupture of routine.
