Richard Pryor’s comedic and acting talents are front and center in Which Way is Up?, a biting comedy about Leroy Jones, an orange picker (played by Pryor) who inadvertently finds himself in the middle of a union uprising.

Forced from his job, Jones leaves his wife and family in search of work in Los Angeles, where he falls for a labor organizer before finding himself a pawn of the very corporation he protested earlier. Pryor took on the roles of three characters in the film including Jones’s crotchety father and the local preacher who impregnates the picker’s wife while he’s in LA. Based on Lina Wertmüller’s 1972 film The Seduction of Mimi, Schultz’s feature remains faithful to the political nature of the original in its portrayal of class, race, sex, capitalism, and organized religion.
