The reclusive Marion Stokes recorded television news coverage 24 hours a day for over 30 years—from the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979 to the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012.
Before “fake news” became ubiquitous, Stokes fought to protect the truth by documenting everything that was said and shown on television on 70,000 VHS tapes—an archive that captures our cultural history and how the media has increasingly shaped the world around us. Ably told by Matt Wolf (Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell), Recorder is a compellingly elusive mystery about a radical Communist activist who became a fabulously wealthy archivist.
