Still from Purple Dreams

This inspiring documentary tracks the first-ever high school production of the musical The Color Purple, a Tony Award–winning adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. Many of the musical’s themes mirror the lives of the at-risk students involved, and its story plays out through the lens of their struggles and triumphs during the play’s rehearsals and performances. As the charismatic, North Carolina–based cast and crew are propelled into a new world of opportunity through their hard work, Purple Dreams offers a powerful example of just how vital arts education programs can be! (72 mins., DCP)

"The opportunity to experience theater in middle and high school shaped who we are. I wouldn’t be able to step back five years later and be myself without that, because the arts train us to be human beings."
