Notorious

(Alfred Hitchcock, 1946)
Introduced by Eric Luszcz, Digital Restoration Artist, Criterion Collection

New Restoration | World Premiere

Considered a turning point in Hitchcock’s career for its thematic maturity, Notorious stars Ingrid Bergman as Alicia, a German American woman enlisted by suave US agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on a group of Nazis in Brazil—all friends of her now-imprisoned father. Of course, Alicia and Devlin fall for each other, and tension mounts as the former appears to get too cozy with the group’s leader (Claude Rains). Featuring some of the most memorable moments in all of Hitchcock’s films, including a spine-tingling, censor-eluding embrace between Grant and Bergman! (101 mins., 4K DCP).

"Seven decades after its premiere…it’s impossible to shake the feeling that Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious is a perfect film—a rare feature in which you wouldn’t want to change a thing."

More about the expert

Eric Luszcz is a digital restoration artist at the Criterion Collection, where he focuses on the manual side of picture restoration, fixing damage that automated software cannot. This is his first appearance at Cinema Revival.
