We’re offering a sliding scale for our Unorthodocs screenings in an effort to keep our programming accessible to all people, especially in a moment of extreme financial uncertainty. Please consider your needs and abilities—as well as those of others—when choosing how much to pay for this screening. We are very grateful for the generous support of patrons with the means to chip in a bit more in these precarious times.
One of the year’s most acclaimed documentaries, Mayor is a real-life political saga following Musa Hadid, the Christian mayor of Ramallah, during his second term in office.
Hadid’s immediate goals: repave the sidewalks, attract more tourism, and plan the city’s Christmas celebrations. His ultimate mission: to end the occupation of Palestine. This balance of micro and macro political issues showcased in Mayor provides a unique backdrop that’s amplified by the world’s seeming indifference to Ramallah’s struggles. Rich with detailed observation and a surprising amount of humor, the film offers a portrait of dignity amid the absurdity of endless occupation while posing a crucial question: how do you run a city when you don’t have a country? (89 mins., digital video)
This presentation includes a conversation between David Osit and Vox film critic Alissa Wilkinson.
