The King of Comedy

(Martin Scorsese, 1983)

The King of Comedy

"Where do these celebrities come from? Are stars invented and imposed upon us or are they chosen by the public?"
J. HOBERMAN

Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy stars Robert De Niro as Rupert Pupkin, an aspiring and unbalanced stand-up comedian and the star of his own talk show—in his mother’s basement. Convinced that an appearance with late-night host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) is the only thing keeping him from stardom, Pupkin stalks and kidnaps Langford, holding him as ransom for a slot on the show. (109 mins., DCP)
