Japón

(Japan, Carlos Reygadas, 2002)

Reygadas fearlessly takes on the very nature of our human condition in his debut feature, Japón. In this deceptively simple tale, a disillusioned man (Alejandro Ferretis) from Mexico City travels to the country with plans to kill himself. There, he meets an old woman (Magdalena Flores) with whom he begins an intimate relationship that helps restore his faith in humanity. Beautifully filmed in Super CinemaScope with natural light. (122 mins., DCP)

"A startling achievement…almost miraculous in its confidence and visionary calm."
