Gremlins

An inventor (Hoyt Axton) looking for a special Christmas present for his son (Zach Galligan) acquires an adorable "mogwai" from a Chinatown antique store. The pet, however, comes with a warning: "Never expose the mogwai to bright lights, never get it wet, and never EVER feed it after midnight!" Needless to say, all of these things happen and suddenly the town of Kingston Falls is overrun by an army of marauding gremlins, leaving cartoonish mayhem in their wake. With Phoebe Cates and Dick Miller! (107 mins., DCP)

"The xenophobic notion of the infernal critters as foreigners is occasionally articulated throughout the movie, but the gremlins’ gleeful destruction is against interpretation and beyond good and evil."
