Flag Wars

(Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras, 2003)

Stream | Artist Residency | Wex Commissioned Project

Pride flag hanging on the porch of a home. Next to this house is a home with an American flag hanging in front.

We’re proud to bring back a film that holds a special place in the center’s history! Filmed in Columbus’s Olde Towne East neighborhood over four years in the early 2000s, Flag Wars is a personal account of urban gentrification and its effects on a community.

Now a common phenomenon, gay families began moving into the area in the 1990s—attracted by and renovating its relatively inexpensive Victorian homes—increasing property values and displacing the neighborhood’s working-class families, many of them African American. In the film we see the clashes caused by this process, exposing prejudice and self-interest on both sides, as well as the common dream of having a home to call your own. The film was created with the support of the center’s Film/Video Studio. (86 mins., digital video). Closed captioning available.
