First Blood

(Ted Kotcheff, 1982)

First Blood

In the taut thriller First Blood, Sylvester Stallone is John Rambo, a Vietnam-era Green Beret turned drifter who runs afoul of the sheriff in a small Washington town. Roughed-up by the local police, he suffers a flashback to the war, beats his captors, and escapes by motorcycle into the woods where he accidentally kills a deputy. As the manhunt intensifies, Rambo’s mentor (Richard Crenna) is summoned to help bring him in. (93 mins., DCP)

"Visitors to the not-yet-opened [Vietnam] memorial were already jumping the gun when another sort of Vietnam monument materialized. The war’s restless ghost, its poltergeist, had been given human form: John Rambo, the muscle-bound lump of grievance embodied by Sylvester Stallone."
