Filibus

(Mario Roncoroni, 1915)
Introduced by Amy Heller and Dennis Doros, Co-owners, Milestone Films

New Restoration

A person in disguise peaks over the shoulder of a woman in a big hat

Featuring what some say is the screen’s first lesbian character, the Italian silent thriller Filibus follows the eponymous, cross-dressing, “mysterious air pirate” as she flies from heist to heist in an airship helmed by an all-male crew. The androgynous heroine manages to stay one step ahead of the dedicated detective on her heels by assuming, as needed, the identities of both a baroness and count (even courting the detective’s sister as the latter!). (70 mins., 2K DCP)

More about the experts

Amy Heller and Dennis Doros founded Milestone Films in 1990. The duo has been behind the rediscovery and release of such classics as Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep (1977), Shirley Clarke’s Portrait of Jason (1967), Kent Mackenzie’s The Exiles (1961), and Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba (1964). This is their second appearance at Cinema Revival.
