Iran's first-ever Oscar submission to be directed by a woman, Breath is set during the tumultuous time in the late 1970s and early 1980s spanning the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. The film follows Bahar (Sareh Nour Mousavi, in a riveting performance), a young girl who retreats into imagination, fantasy, and folklore in the face of the conflict around her. Using short animated sequences and intimate voice-overs, this visually impressive film beautifully evokes a child's perception of the world. (112 mins., DCP) In Persian with English subtitles. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
